In 1977 following the successful Smith & Wesson Blackie Collins designed series of knives, Robert Ferraro an engineer was requested to design a new series of medium-priced folding and fixed blade knives. Three years in development, in 1980 Smith & Wesson announced its new stainless-steel folding knives named the Maverick in both Clip and Drop Point.

With the success of the Maverick and Ultra-Thin, in 1981 Smith & Wesson introduced the American Series consisting of 4 fixed blade knives. Constructed of 440 Stainless steel with a “Posi-Grip” handle of rubber directly molded to the full tang blade with a heavy brass hilt to protect the hand. They were offered in four popular styles, Large Upsweep, Small Upsweep, Light Duty and Heavy Duty.

The American Series was made in the USA for Smith & Wesson by Vermont Knives.
