1970’s Ithaca Gun Track Knife, White River, 5 1/2" General Game and Camping

Ray Schmidt of Whitefish, Montana started making knives when he was 12, grinding and beating metal until he had something that could handle the demanding tasks of an outdoorsman. His friend from school, Don Pfirmerer, hunted, fished, and hiked together. Graduating School Don went to college, got married and moved to Alaska. Ray continued to make knives for friends when someone requested one. He worked full time in a sawmill and made knives parttime.

In the middle of 1970 Don and Ray started Track knives. In 1973 Don who had been active in country music, left Track knives for Nashville. Barry Wood who was their Business Manager and Ray bought out Don and continued. In 1973 Track Knives were also admitted into the Knifemakers Guild and a distribution agreement was signed with Ithaca Guns. Track knives had developed an inventory of 13 different models, each unique.

The blade steel carries a Rockwell of 58-59 and it is so hard the company logo of a bear paw is engraved on the blade as the metal is too hard for it to be stamped. All blades are flat ground for maximum strength.
